Are firearms allowed on campus?

No. Massachusetts General Law prohibits carrying a firearm on the grounds of any college or university without the written authorization of the board or officer in charge of the college or university. For more information, please review the Harvard College Handbook.

Does the University offer any type of roadside assistance?

The University’s Motorist Assistance Program (MAP) provides free on-campus emergency road service to all faculty, staff, students, and visitors to the University on the Allston and Cambridge campus. This service offers assistance to motorists who need help charging a dead battery, changing a tire, or retrieve keys that have been locked inside a vehicle. Is there a place where I can store money temporarily prior to the bank's opening?

The HUPD maintains a safe deposit box at the front desk of HUPD headquarters at 1033 Massachusetts Avenue, sixth floor. Does the HUPD disseminate incident reports to the public?

No. In the interest of maintaining community members' privacy, the HUPD does not disseminate incident reports to the public. Because the HUPD is a private police agency, it is not required under the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' Public Record Law to disseminate police reports to the public. The University's Office of the General Counsel has authorized the HUPD to provide both theft and accident victims copies of incident reports, primarily for insurance purposes.

No. The HUPD does not write letters stating that a student has not been arrested. Why does it seem that access to buildings on the Longwood Campus is more restricted than access to buildings on the Cambridge campus?

Universities and colleges are constantly struggling with the appropriate balance of security and freedom of movement. Appropriate levels of security are determined by schools and departments in coordination with the HUPD. Regardless of how secure an environment is, community members should still take appropriate precautions to protect themselves and their property, such as by securing their personal property, locking their doors when leaving a room or office (even for a moment), and calling the HUPD immediately when they observe suspicious activity.
