Public Police Log

The HUPD produces a written daily crime log that is available to the public, as required by the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act, codified at 20 USC 1092 (f), 34CFR668.46 as part of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (The Clery Act), and Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 41, Section 98F. The purpose of the daily log is to provide information about reports of criminal and other significant incidents occurring on campus to members of the University community, which have been reported to the HUPD, or Campus Security Authorities (CSA), and which might be relevant for their safety and security. The crime log includes the nature of the crime, date that the crime was reported to HUPD, date and time where the crime was alleged to occur, the general location, the disposition, and is updated when there are changes. The crime log includes both Clery Act reportable and non-Clery Act reportable crimes. Entries are logged within two days of receipt of the report. 

Information from the HUPD log can be found in three locations. There are two official logs, which contain sixty days of incidents reported to the HUPD. The first is kept at HUPD headquarters, 1033 Massachusetts Avenue, 6th floor and the second is kept at the HUPD Longwood office space at 180 Longwood Ave, Boston, from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. The official logs are updated as new information becomes available. In addition, the HUPD also posts an electronic version of the log at http://www.hupd.harvard.edu/public-police-log. Although the HUPD attempts to make the electronic version of the log as accurate as possible at the time of posting, it is not the official police log. Logs of crimes older than 60 days can be available with two days notice to the HUPD.

In certain cases, HUPD may delay adding the report of a crime to the public Police Crime Log, such as if adding the crime would jeopardize an ongoing criminal investigation or the safety of a student, could cause a suspect to flee or evade detection, or could result in evidence destruction. In such cases, the addition to the log will be delayed and added later when the risk is abated.
